As September comes to a close, many people find themselves balancing packed calendars, work responsibilities, school activities, holiday planning and the transition into a new season. While routines can help us stay organized, they can also create a sense of mental overload when life feels too busy.
Just as we declutter our homes during seasonal transitions, it’s important to periodically declutter our minds.
Mental clutter can show up in many ways: difficulty concentrating, feeling overwhelmed by a to-do list, constantly multitasking, struggling to relax or feeling like your brain never fully “shuts off.” While occasional stress is normal, consistently carrying too much mental load can impact sleep, productivity, mood and overall well-being.
September is an ideal time to evaluate not just your physical health habits, but your mental habits as well.
PHMP Health Coach Linn highlights the importance of reducing distractions and focusing intentionally on one task at a time. As part of building healthier routines, Linn recommends limiting digital distractions and avoiding constant multitasking, which can contribute to mental fatigue and burnout.
Creating space for mental wellness doesn’t require major changes. Small adjustments often provide the greatest benefit. Consider setting aside a few minutes each day to organize your priorities, practice gratitude, take a short walk or step away from screens.

PHMP Health Coach Melanie also recommends establishing healthy routines that support restorative sleep, including maintaining a consistent bedtime schedule. Quality sleep helps improve memory, concentration, emotional regulation, and stress management.
Another helpful strategy is learning to identify what truly requires your attention. Not every email, notification or task is equally urgent. Giving yourself permission to focus on what matters most can reduce stress and improve productivity.
If your mind feels constantly busy, try adopting a “brain dump” practice. Keep a notebook nearby and spend five minutes writing down everything on your mind. Often, simply moving those thoughts from your head to paper creates a greater sense of calm and control.
As fall continues, remember that health isn’t only about nutrition, exercise, and preventive care. Mental wellness is an essential part of your overall health. Taking time to create mental space can help you enter the final months of the year feeling more focused, balanced, and energized.

Notice how even small reductions in mental clutter can improve focus and energy.
