Back-to-school season often revolves around children – new schedules, school supplies, sports practices and checking off school health requirements. But while you’re helping others get back into their routines, have you considered your own health?
September is an ideal time for adults to hit reset as well.
As family schedules become more predictable, many adults find themselves with opportunities to refocus on personal goals that may have taken a back seat during the summer months. Whether it’s getting back to regular exercise, meal planning, preventive care appointments or stopping habits that no longer serve you, the “back-to-school” mindset can benefit everyone.
“Refresh your own routines as children return to the classroom. Get back to your workout routine and reclaim a weeknight to meal prep.” PHMP Health Coach Shallece encourages adults to use this seasonal transition as an opportunity for personal reinvention.
One area many adults overlook is sleep. PHMP Health Coach Melanie recommends maintaining a regular bedtime to help condition the body for deeper, more restorative sleep. Quality sleep improves concentration, mood, productivity and overall health.
September is also a great reminder to review your own preventive healthcare needs, including annual physicals, age-appropriate screenings and seasonal immunizations. Just because they’re often discussed during the school year doesn’t mean vaccines are only important for children.
PHMP Health Coach Linn highlights several habits that support a healthy and productive routine, including prioritizing sleep, setting achievable goals, staying active, eating balanced meals and reducing digital distractions.

As the school year gets underway, consider what healthy habit you’d like to bring back into your own life. Small changes now can have lasting benefits throughout the rest of the year.
