Packing school lunches can sometimes feel like a daily challenge. Between busy mornings, picky eaters, and finding foods that stay fresh until lunchtime, it’s easy to fall into repetitive habits. Fortunately, building a balanced lunch doesn’t have to be complicated.
The goal isn’t perfection, it’s creating meals that provide energy, nutrients and variety to support learning and growth throughout the school day.
PHMP Health Coach Linn recommends keeping lunches simple by including one or two foods from four primary categories:
- Fruit
- Vegetables
- Protein or dairy
- Carbohydrates
This approach creates balanced meals without requiring extensive meal preparation. Fruits such as berries, apples, bananas and mandarin oranges provide vitamins and fiber. Vegetables like cucumbers, carrots, mini peppers and cherry tomatoes add color and nutrients. Proteins such as yogurt, cheese sticks, deli meats, hard-boiled eggs or nut butters support growth and satiety. Whole grains, pasta, crackers and tortillas provide energy for active learners.

PHMP Health Coach Shallece reinforces this strategy by encouraging parents to stick to the basics and use seasonal options whenever possible. Keeping foods colorful and varied helps make lunches more appealing while introducing children to a wider variety of nutrient-rich foods.
Health Coach Melanie suggests an “Eat the Rainbow” approach by including foods of different colors such as grape tomatoes, cucumbers, blueberries, peppers, cheese and grapes. This makes lunches more fun while naturally increasing nutritional variety.
“Healthy eating supports growth, development, and overall wellness in children.” – PHMP Health Coach Carlos
Lunch doesn’t need to be fancy to be effective. Consistent, balanced choices can support concentration, learning, and healthy habits that last well beyond the school years.
