Back-to-school season often comes with lists of required supplies, forms and activities; but one of the most important items on that list may be ensuring immunizations are up to date.

Vaccines help protect individuals and communities from serious diseases. They have played a significant role in reducing the spread of many illnesses that once caused widespread health complications. Staying current with recommended immunizations helps children, teens and adults maintain protection as they move through different stages of life.

“Vaccination helps protect individuals and communities from serious diseases.” PHMP Health Coach Carlos explains

Many schools require proof of immunization before enrollment. PHMP Health Coach Shallece reminds families that pre-kindergarten students, kindergarteners, sixth graders and high school seniors often have vaccination requirements before returning to school. Families should check with their local school district for specific requirements.

Health Coach Linn notes that children typically receive important vaccines during their toddler and preschool years, while adolescents often receive Tdap, meningococcal and HPV vaccinations during middle school years. The HPV vaccine is especially important because it helps protect against several forms of cancer later in life.

Body Immunizations

Even when vaccinations are not required, reviewing records annually can help ensure nothing has been missed.

PHMP Health Coach Melanie encourages parents to make vaccination review part of their annual health planning: “Parents should check with their primary healthcare team to make sure their child and/or children’s regular vaccinations are up to date before school starts.“

Immunizations are an important part of preventive healthcare. A quick review today can help prevent larger health concerns later in the year.
