As summer winds down and school supplies begin filling shopping carts, many families are focused on preparing for a successful school year. While backpacks, schedules and classroom assignments are important, one of the best ways to set children up for success is with a back-to-school health check.

Preventive care helps identify concerns before they become bigger issues. Routine physicals, vision and hearing screenings, dental checkups, immunization reviews and mental health check-ins all play an important role in helping children thrive both academically and socially.

PHMP Health Coach Linn recommends reviewing several key areas before the school year begins, including physical exams, vision and hearing tests, dental care, immunizations, mental health screenings and nutrition and sleep routines.

Sleep is often one of the biggest challenges as summer schedules transition back to school routines. PHMP Health Coach Shallece reminds families that children ages 6–12 typically need 9–12 hours of sleep per night, while teens generally need 8–10 hours. She also recommends easing back into a school-year sleep schedule before classes begin and checking in emotionally with children about the upcoming school year. Some children may experience anxiety or stress, and a simple conversation can help ease concerns.

Preventive care isn’t just about physical health. Emotional and behavioral well-being also influence learning, concentration and overall success. Back-to-school season can be a great opportunity to talk about expectations, friendships and any concerns children may have.

“Healthy routines and supportive environments can help students improve health and well-being,” PHMP Health Coach Carlos.

Taking time now to review medications, update emergency contact forms and schedule preventive appointments can help families start the school year with confidence and peace of mind.
