Independence is often associated with freedom; the freedom to make choices, pursue goals and create the life you want. When it comes to health, one of the most empowering freedoms is breaking away from habits that no longer serve you.
Whether it’s skipping physical activity, relying on processed foods, staying up too late, excessive screen time or another behavior you’d like to change, lasting improvement starts with understanding why the habit exists in the first place.
PHMP Health Coach Linn explains, “When breaking unhealthy habits is your goal, the first step is to understand why you are doing them to begin with. What’s the payout?”
Every habit serves a purpose. Some provide comfort, others help us cope with stress and some simply become routine. Once you identify what’s driving the behavior, you can begin replacing it with healthier alternatives that meet the same need.
Changing habits isn’t about willpower alone. It’s about making small structural changes that support success. PHMP Health Coach Shallece encourages members to “Declare freedom from processed foods, break the chain of a sedentary lifestyle, free your mind from negativity, and maintain progress—not perfection.”

Another powerful strategy is changing the way you think about yourself. PHMP Health Coach Melanie suggests shifting from statements like, “I am trying to eat better” to “I am a person who prioritizes my health.” Identity-based habits are often more sustainable because they focus on who you want to become rather than what you’re trying to avoid.
As America celebrates 250 years of independence, think about the habits you’d like to gain freedom from. The journey doesn’t have to be dramatic. One small change, repeated consistently, can create meaningful results over time.
