Stress and anxiety are often confused, yet understanding the difference can help you respond with the right tools and support.

Stress is usually triggered by something external – work deadlines, conflicts or life changes. Anxiety tends to be more persistent and internal. PHMP Health Coach Linn explains, “Stress has an external trigger and can be short term or long term. Anxiety involves persistent worries that don’t go away even in the absence of a stressor.”

“Stress usually subsides when the situation is resolved. Anxiety often lingers as internal ‘what if’ thoughts, even after the stressor is gone,” adds PHMP Coach Shallece.

While symptoms may overlap like fatigue, irritability and concentration issues, the root causes differ.

Emotional regulation begins with awareness and naming what you’re experiencing. Stress may benefit from time management or rest. Anxiety often responds better to grounding techniques, therapy or consistent calming habits.

Coach Melanie simplifies it further: “Stress is caused by an existing stressor. Anxiety is stress that continues after the stressor is gone.” When emotions feel overwhelming, slowing down physiologically through breathing, grounding or movement helps reset the nervous system.

Support matters! Coach Carlos emphasizes, “Stress is typically a response to an external challenge, while anxiety involves persistent feelings of worry or fear that may not be tied to a specific situation.” If anxiety interferes with daily life, professional care can provide tools to manage it effectively.

Weekly Challenge: Pause & Label
