We all know why we should move more, eat healthier, and sit less, but what’s the deal with this ‘10,000 steps a day’ craze? Is that magical number simply marketing shtick used to sell more fitness trackers, or is there real value to setting a daily step goal?

Researchers think the idea of walking at least 10,000 steps daily originated in Japan during the 1960s when a company launched a line of pedometers called manpo-kei, which means “10,000-step meter.

As Americans began walking less and sitting more, studies were launched to find out if this 10,000 step thing was just another marketing slogan, or if there were actual measurable health benefits associated with logging some extra steps each day.

Not surprisingly, scientists discovered that counting your steps could deliver some impressive results, including improved sleep, lowered blood pressure, and even better brain functioning.

Walking is hands-down the safest, simplest form of exercise – it’s low impact, you can do it anywhere, and you set the pace.

Ever notice how people who walk seem to be happier than the average bear? That’s no coincidence – researchers have proven that walking helps ease the symptoms of depression and even prevent it’s onset.

All Those Extra Steps Really Add Up

If the thoughts of walking 10,000 steps all at once seems overwhelming, don’t stress – simply look for ways to add a couple extra steps into your regular routine. It’s as easy as parking a little bit further away from the grocery store, opting to take the stairs instead of the elevator, and doing an extra lap around the office on your way to the photocopier.

There’s literally no downside to walking 10,000 steps every day, making this one fitness bandwagon that’s worth jumping on. Hippocrates, the undisputed father of modern medicine, really should get some credit though – over 2000 years ago, he was spot-on when he said that “walking is a man’s best medicine”!

    Several co-workers have been doing this for some months, and are feeling stronger and yes, emotionally uplifted. One had struggled with depression, and walking for 30 minutes with her friend 5 days a week has really helped her ward off stress and ease her stress.
