Your body begins digesting your food while it is still in your mouth.  Taking the time to mix saliva in with the food, chewing well, begins digestion. Your saliva contains enzymes that begin to break down simple starches before swallowing.

The Role of Enzymes in your Body

Enzymes are required for proper digestion.   Food, by nature, if it is raw, and not cooked or frozen or processed contains live enzymes.  Live enzyme foods are often easier to digest than other foods, if properly chewed and masticated. Cooking any food over 118 F temp or freezing, canning, drying, packaging that food of a necessity destroys the enzyme content.

Your body is supposed to manufacture and release some of these enzymes.  Hydrochloric acid is one enzyme that is released by your stomach to help break down food.  Many people think they have too much acid, when really the opposite is true.

If you eat too much processed food over time you will deplete many of the enzymes in your body.  No enzymes = no life!  Enzymes are an important part of life1,2.

Boosting Your Enzyme Levels Naturally

There’s four ways to naturally increase your enzyme levels:

  • Increase your intake of raw, living foods
  • Eat fewer calories
  • Chew your food thoroughly
  • Avoid chewing gum

The best way to get enzymes into your body is by consuming at least 75 percent of your foods raw. For many of you, you’ll have to work toward this goal.

While all raw foods contain enzymes, the most powerful enzyme-rich foods are those that are sprouted (seeds and legumes). Sprouting increases enzyme content in these foods tremendously. Other enzyme-rich foods include:

  • Papaya, pineapple, mango, kiwi, and grapes
  • Avocado
  • Raw honey (the enzymes actually come from the bee’s saliva)
  • Bee pollen
  • Extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil help your body produce enzymes
  • Raw meat and dairy

The best way to bump up your metabolic enzymes is to provide your body with the raw materials and energy it needs to make them. By eating these types of foods, you supply your body with the amino acids and the enzyme co-factors needed to boost your own natural enzyme production.
