Digestion: The Foundation of Health

Poor digestion and gut dysfunction can be linked to virtually every disease and can cause cancer, neurological illness, fatigue, depression, food sensitivities, chronic pain, allergies, chronic inflammation, and more.  Even if your struggle is not listed, please keep reading!

Why? Inflammation is caused from poor diet, eating patterns and digestive or gut disturbances has been documented to irritate and escalate heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity as well. So this is for you too!

Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut”.  If that’s true, the inverse must also be true: If you can heal your gut, you’ve gone a long way towards healing whatever dis-ease is ailing you. Good news: YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR DIGESTION AND HEAL YOUR GUT!!!

  • Your ability to digest food has a direct correlation between how strong or weak, nourished or malnourished, energized or fatigued you are.
  • Digestion determines if your body is ABSORBING the nutrients you eat.
  • Your digestive system is responsible to:
    1. breakdown food into small units
    2. absorb nutrients
    3. destroy germs viruses that are ingested
    4. Discard waste.  Faulty digestion will not allow your body to do this
  • Digestive medications don’t solve your body’s digestion or absorption problems.
  • You CAN naturally provide your body the ability to digest and absorb nutrients.

Symptoms of Digestive Dysfunction:

“Poor digestion can do more than give you a stomach ache or gas because digestion is the mechanism that makes your body work…a clog in the works may be only the tip of the iceberg. Chronic fatigue, premature aging, arthritis, poor skin and hair quality, toxicity, allergies, cancer, and many other diseases can all result from faulty digestion because poor digestion interferes with nutrient breakdown, absorption and metabolism; allows toxins to remain in the body and accumulate; and over-stresses the body.” Dr. Anthony Cichoke

Tips:

  1. Digestion begins in your mouth!  Oral health helps gut health.  Have missing, broken, hurting teeth checked by your dentist.
  2. Chew food thoroughly!  Digestion begins in your mouth!  Soft fruits and vegetables will break down more easily than chicken or steak. Make sure you chew your food as thoroughly as possible. Chew softer foods 5-10 times, and more dense foods (meats/vegetables) up to 30 times before swallowing.
  3. Don’t eat when angry or upset.
  4. Eat meals when relaxed; preferably in a quiet and peaceful location. A stressful mood or loud noise can lead to poor digestion and absorption.
  5. Don’t gobble, stuff, or inhale your food!  Be intentional, enjoy your food.
  6. Don’t drink a lot of liquids before or while eating; this dilutes digestive juices.
  7. Take time to rest a little before going back to work
  8. Never lay down right after eating.  Sit up at least one hour before lying down
  9. Don’t eat late at night; before 7 PM is best.
